Carpet Yeni Khatai Artist: Mammadhuseyn Huseynov. 1998. Warp, weft - cotton; pile - wool. Private collection
This carpet derives from a sumakh, a type of flat-woven carpet with a Khatai composition. The artist applied the synthesis of new and different symbolic patterns in its unique design. An abstract-shaped human image formed from the arms of the Khatai ornament sets the central field. The surrounding spaces top with various patterns representing the ancient Turkic cosmogony. The carpet's border depicts a comb-shaped garmagli pattern.
