Azerbaijan Carpet Museum is 50: Gift from the Heydar Aliyev Foundation

In the year of its 50th anniversary, the Carpet Museum's collection was replenished with another valuable exhibit. This is the 18th-century Azerbaijani embroidery of rare beauty, geometric patterns of which are embroidered with soft Sheki silk, flickering in the light. These kinds of samples of rare Azerbaijani embroidery are a pride of such well-known museums of the world as the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Textile Museum (Washington), the Museum of Islamic Culture (Berlin), the Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts (Budapest), and others. They are highly appreciated by experts and are valuable exhibits in any collection. In the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum there are a number of embroideries of this period, made in satin-stitch technique. However, the new exhibit exceeds them in terms of its artistic composition and technical design.
The embroidery was purchased at Christie's Auction this year in April and donated to the Carpet Museum by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Assistance in enriching the collection of the Carpet Museum is another significant contribution from Mehriban Aliyeva, First Vice President of Azerbaijan, and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation she runs, in the development and preservation of the national culture and art.
