Trip to Basgal

On November 17, 2017, on the 50th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, as well as Latif Karimov’s birthday, founder, artist, carpet weaver, theorist of carpet weaving art, and on the eve of the Day of Azerbaijani Kelagai, trip to Basgal, the land of kelagai, was organized. The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum and “Kelagai” Silk Center are the tour organizers.
Christine Mueller-Radloff, Conservator of the Dresden State Art Collection, and Ludmila Shklayeva, Researcher at the Institute of Language, Literature, and Arts named after G. Ibrahimov of the Academy of Science of the Republic Tatarstan, together with the museum staff participated in the trip.
In Basgal, the guests got acquainted with the “Kelagai” Silk Center.
Here, Rena Ibrahimbeyova and Jalil Tarverdiyev, Founders and Heads of the Center, welcomed the guests and gave them detailed information about the all stages of kelagai preparation. There also operates the Kelagai Museum in the center. The guests got acquainted with the history and traditions of the kelagai, and also participated in this process.
It should be noted that November 26, Day of Azerbaijani Kelagai, is internationally celebrated. On November 26, 2014, the Traditional Art and Symbolism of Kelagai was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum celebrates the Day of Azerbaijani Kelagai for the second consecutive year. On that day, master classes and tours to the kelagai production centers are organized, guests obtain information about the history and traditions of this art.
