The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum has received the National Status
The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum has received the National status for its significant contribution in popularization and promotion of the Azerbaijani Carpet Weaving Art. The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted a relevant decision on July 15. The Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Finance are instructed to address the issues arising from this decision.
“We have been looking forward to this decision. The adoption of the Law On the Preservation and Development of Azerbaijani Carpet Art, inclusion of the Azerbaijani Carpet Weaving Art within the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, construction of a modern building for the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, and other very important events are the obvious embodiment of our state’s care about our museum,” said Shirin Melikova, Director of the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, Chair of ICOM Azerbaijan National Committee, Honored Cultural Worker.
"On behalf of the museum staff, I express our deepest gratitude to Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Novruz Mammadov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Abulfas Garayev, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” added Shirin Melikova.
The world’s first Carpet Museum was established on the initiative of Latif Karimov, founder of the science of Azerbaijani Carpet Weaving Art, in 1967 in Baku.
The museum is among the world’s most renowned museums for its significant and rich collection, as well as its scientific and technical equipment.
According to statistics, in 2018, more than 110,000 visitors got acquainted with the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum collection. At the same time, the museum's work is also highly appreciated by international museum organizations. In 2018, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum was awarded the Best Experience in the field of intangible cultural heritage database by CIDOC – ICOM International Committee for Documentation. Our museum also became a nominee for the 2018 European Museum of the Year Award and received the certificate for its noteworthy achievement in raising the public quality of the museum. Last but not least, for the second straight year, the Carpet Museum has been awarded the Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor.
“This status opens new opportunities for our museum. Thus, the national status raises the museum prestige in our country and around the world, emphasizing our special role in the preservation, enrichment, and development of culture and arts. At the same time, the adoption of this decision is a step towards improving the material welfare of our museum staff. The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum staff welcomed this news with great enthusiasm and happiness. Our museum as an important scientific and cultural institution, where material samples of our people are protected, will continue to work with even greater responsibility and perseverance,” emphasized Sh. Melikova.
