Ladi

Dear Friends!
We continue to share about Flat Woven Carpets! Next is LADI, one of the types of flat-woven carpets.
Ladi, Karabakh, Azerbaijan. Early 20th century. Early 20th century. Warp, weft – cotton. Interweaving. Inv. No.7882
Ladi occupies a special place among the interesting and precious exhibits preserved in the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum collection. It should be noted that the word 'ladi' comes from Ladi tribe inhabited in Gazakh and Karabakh. These carpets are mainly woven from wool and cotton. Warp and weft threads and the patterning yarn form its design. Ladi carpets are woven in simple interweaving technique, where the patterning yarn horizontally passes through several warps. As a result, the horizontal stitches called sirig cover the carpet's surface. These carpets are made in Karabakh, Qazakh, Tovuz, Yardimli, and South Azerbaijan, and used for covering a floor or wall. In Gazakh, Borchali (in particular in Garayazi village), and Goycha ladi is knows as darma-kilim. Notably, ladi smaller in size was used to make a cradle.
