Carpet Salyan Khilasi

Carpet Salyan Khilasi. Shirvan, Azerbaijan. 19th century. Warp, weft - cotton, pile - wool. 110x331 cm. Inv. No. 9389
The carpet was donated to the museum by Beverly Schilz, widow of the late Grover Schilz
The carpet is considered to be one of the most beautiful samples of the Shirvan carpet weaving center. Its composition consists of a central field and borders. The central field with a navy background represents a single-medallion design. Three vertically arranged geometrical medallions adorn the carpet's surface. Bright floral elements decorate the space between medallions. The torch element embellishes the carpet's main border, which gives it a special beauty. Ribbon-like elements such as mollabashi, earth, and water surround the carpet's narrow borders. The carpet's coloring is very harmonious and typical of Shirvan carpets.
