Joint project of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum and the Russian Museum of Ethnography
Today, the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum actively promotes our carpet art and cultural heritage policy abroad. One of the museum’s core activities within the international arena is to work towards proving the origin of Azerbaijani carpets from certain foreign museum collections, correct their labels and annotations, then gather them in a catalog, and organize an exhibition featuring Azerbaijani carpets from those museum’s collections.
The Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum has already established several cooperation projects within the paragraph 7.1.3 of the State Program on the Protection and Development of Carpet Art in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2018-2022 (Preparation of catalog on rare Azerbaijani carpets stored in museums and private collections in the country and abroad).
We are excited to announce our following cooperation with the Russian Museum of Ethnography in Saint Petersburg. The Russian Museum of Ethnography, established in 1902, preserves a large collection of ethnographic materials about Azerbaijan. Both museum teams plan to conduct scientific research, prepare catalog, and organize an exhibition of Azerbaijani decorative and applied arts within the project Pearls of Azerbaijan from the Collection of the Russian Museum of Ethnography. This exhibition will be organized as part of the IX Saint Petersburg International Cultural Forum in November 2020 in Saint Petersburg. Notably, this year our country will be represented as an Honorable Guest Country.
Shirin Melikova, Director of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum arranged a meeting with Yulia Kupina, Director of the Russian Museum of Ethnography during her visit to Saint Petersburg. They discussed the upcoming project, as well as consider to hold an exhibition of the Russian Museum of Ethnography in Baku.
