Bahari. Chain stitch embroidery, garagez

This Friday's object from the museum's Textile, Clothing, Embroidery collection is BAHARI.

Another type of shoulder outerwear that Azerbaijani women wore in cold weather was a bahari. A bahari was trimmed with quilted lace to the waist, was tight-fitting, and had a waistband with frills. The bahari usually reached the hips. The sleeves were elbow length, and the front was not zipped. A bahari was commonly worn in Karabakh, Baku, and Lankaran.
The bahari’s background was made mainly of velvet in a single dark color, which is particularly suitable for artistic embroidery. The borders, collar and sleeves’ edges were decorated. Various sherid, zeh (curved delicate edges of other fabrics) and golden laces were used as decorations.
