Chepken (women's outerwear)
Our next object from the museum's Textile, Clothing, Embroidery collection is CHEPKEN.
Chepken is a traditional type of women’s outerwear that was widespread throughout Azerbaijan. A chepken was lined and had a tight-fitting shape. There were small slits at either side. A distinctive feature of the chepken is the presence of long false sleeves covering the hands. Such sleeves were sewn to the shoulders. Sometimes there were buttons through the slits. The sleeves’ lining was made of expensive silk in contrasting colors. A chepken was made of termeh, velvet, and different gilded fabrics. It was adorned with sherid (flattened webbing), the kobe (curved edges) of other fabrics, and gilded lace.
