Carpet Mughan

Dear friends!

We present you information about the Mughan carpet, which has a turbulent history as a result of Armenian vandalism.

Afat Safarova, a doctor, donated the carpet which was a souvenir of her family to our museum in 2017. An interesting example of this famous composition, known since the Middle Ages and depicted in the paintings of European artists, has been saved from destruction several times. During Armanian vandalism the carpet expelled from the homeland was always with Afat Safarova's great-grandfather. The family lived in Chullu village of Zangazur region. In 1906, this village was completely destroyed by Armenian aggressors. During the massacres in Zangazur in 1905-1906, most Azerbaijanis were forced to leave their homes. Afat Safarova remembers what her grandmother said, "We took the children in our arms and ran quickly." Although many years have passed, this carpet has remained the most valuable item for Afat Safarova`s family.
