The exhibition A Meeting of Nobles to be held in Shusha

On May 20, the exhibition A Meeting of Nobles will open at the Shusha Branch of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum. The exhibition will feature the early 20th-century carpets Meeting of Nobles and Baghchada Gullar (Flowers in Garden) from the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum collection. These carpets of Shusha group of the Karabakh carpet type are distinguished bu high pile, vibrant coloring and delicate weave.

Starting from the second half of the 19th century, various products were imported from Russia into Azerbaijan. Baghchada Gullar carpet is one of the famous compositions created by the Shusha craftsmen inspired by depictions on the mentioned products.

Along with ornamental carpets, plotted carpets like A Meeting of Nobles were woven in Shusha mainly in the early 20th century. These artworks have the depiction of three men, talking and smoking hookah and sitting on the podium covered with Shusha carpet. They are presented according to the period: sitting leaned on pillows and in garments made from fine fabric with rich patterns. The central fields of the carpets, rich in real-life elements are surrounded by the border with flower ornaments. The inclusion of dates and verses from classical literature is among the notable features of these carpets.
