Aydin Rajabov’s exhibition at the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

On May 24, Aydin Rajabov, Honored Artist of Azerbaijan, winner of the Soltan Muhammad Award, Head of the Section of Decorative Applied Arts at the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan, will present his personal exhibition Future of Traditions at the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum within his 75th anniversary. This name reflects the very essence of the versatile and multifaceted creativity of the artist.
He has created many pile and flat-woven carpet sketches over the decades of work in carpet making. In his ornamental work, he actively uses traditional Turkic-Oguz ornamental motifs. The influence of the medieval Azerbaijani miniature is clearly traced in some of his narrative carpets, while others are distinguished by a geometric design.
In his several works, the ornament hides encrypted inscriptions. For example, Suvar Dervish carpet (currently kept in the Azerbaijan State Art Gallery); Tengricarpet, the compositional structure of which is entirely based on symbols of ancient writing; Harmony of Lines carpet, where the name of Imam Ali is encrypted in Arabic; Absheron carpet, on which the cloud patterns are formed into the words of the Muslim declaration of faith: There is no God but Allah.
For this exhibition, the artist has prepared six new carpets, which have been woven based on his sketches for the last year and have not been shown anywhere. In total, the exhibition will display more than thirty carpets and carpet products of different years, as well as their twenty-seven sketches, including the first drafts. Thus, the viewer will be able to observe the process of creating a carpet sketch since the inception of its idea.
